INTO Pre-Master's English

This is a full-time, intensive programme in academic English and study skills designed for academically qualified international students preparing to enter postgraduate study in the UK. The programme incorporates English language skill development, academic study skills and specific postgraduate research skills – all that’s needed for successful university study. Students will also be given the opportunity to gain practical experience of university teaching and study methods through the postgraduate research skills module and some attendance of university lectures.

All of these elements will help students adjust to the demands, challenges and expectations of Scottish higher education and culture.

Students can enrol on the Pre-Master’s English course in September, January or April. With multiple entry points and different durations of study, the programme has the flexibility to cater for students at different language levels. At the end of each term, all students are tested in reading, writing, listening and speaking, to give a clear indication of progress.

Core skills

The development of core skills in general English and academic English is a key part of the course and includes the following:

• reading;

• speaking;

• listening;

• writing skills;

• vocabulary;

• grammar.

Postgraduate Study Skills

This module enables students to have the opportunity to develop their knowledge, ability and confidence in a variety of skills that are essential for postgraduate study, including:

• planning and getting started on research projects;

• research methods;

• taking part in, or leading group discussions;

• quantitative and qualitative data analysis;

• team working;

• problem solving;

• critical thinking;

• time management;

• listening and note taking from authentic lectures.

The Postgraduate Study Skills module also provides students with specific guidance that relates to their proposed postgraduate degree programme. Students will be introduced to the structure of postgraduate qualifications in Scotland and what will be expected of them, receive guidance on referencing conventions within their academic school, and training in research methods and skills.

Programme outcomes

Students will be given independent advice and guidance with the process of choosing and applying for a postgraduate programme at Glasgow Caledonian University, at other institutions in Scotland and across the UK.

Assuming students have met the academic entry requirements for their chosen postgraduate degree programme, success on the Pre-Master’s English course will equip students with the necessary language and study skills for direct entry to a postgraduate degree (without the need for another IELTS exam result). The normal English language entry requirement for direct entry to Scottish postgraduate degree programmes is IELTS 6 or 6.5 (or equivalent). This requirement may vary depending on your academic subject.

The Postgraduate Foundation course [now Pre-Master’s programme] helped me in the way it introduced the environment of my postgraduate studies. It enabled me to gradually adjust myself to the postgraduate modules and lectures. You could say that the course successfully bridged my two academically different stages (undergraduate and postgraduate) and stylistically different states (national and international).
