The city has a strong sporting tradition. Newcastle is perhaps most famous for its football team, with St James’ Park situated just a short walk from the University campus. Sports fans can also enjoy rugby union, basketball, ice hockey, international athletics and first-class cricket. There are also plenty of ways to get involved in sport, whether you choose to join ‘Team Newcastle’ at the University, make the most of the parks throughout the city for jogging or even participate in the annual Great North Run, the world’s biggest half marathon!Newcastle is one of the leading universities for sport in the UK.
In 2007, the University finished in 9th place in the British Universities Sports Association (BUSA) league, confirming its place among the top 10 UK universities for sport. The University’s new £5.5 million sports centre is regarded as one of the most modern in the University sector.The Athletic Union (AU) and the Centre for Physical Recreation and Sport provide excellent facilities and an extensive programme of competitive and recreational sporting activities for students. All students are eligible to become members of the Athletic Union, and there are approximately 60 sports teams to choose from, including conventional sports such as football and badminton, to more adventurous pursuits such as sailing, tae kwon do and ultimate frisbee.
Membership of the University Sports Centre
All INTO students automatically receive free Recreational Membership at the University Sports Centre, which includes use of all indoor and outdoor facilities owned by the University with the exception of the Health and Fitness Suite. Recreational Membership enables you to play badminton, basketball, indoor football, netball, volleyball, squash, cricket and table tennis at the Sports Centre, as well as participate in a wide range of exercise and dance classes. Members are also able to use a number of outdoor facilities offering rugby, football, hockey, netball, lacrosse, tennis, golf and rowing by joining an Athletic Union Club.For more information visit www.ncl.ac.uk/cprs
