Culture and music

The University is proud to be part of the rich cultural life of Newcastle, working closely with the regional development agency and many local enterprises to support arts in the region.

Culture Quarter
In keeping with the city’s cultural renaissance, a dynamic new Cultural Quarter is being developed at the north-east corner of the campus where the University meets the city. Culture Lab, a new interdisciplinary research centre, is just one component of this dynamic development, which also includes the newly refurbished Northern Stage theatre, the £26 million Great North Museum (due to open in 2009), and a proposed new Northern Writers’ Centre. In addition to the physical quarter, plans also include making use of the latest new ICT technologies to develop a ‘virtual Cultural Quarter’.

Music
The Union Society and the International Centre for Music Studies organise a full range of music events, featuring a variety of shows from upand- coming bands to classical concerts. The School of Arts and Cultures encourages musical groups in a variety of styles and also runs an extensive programme of lunchtime and evening concerts given by both students and professional artists. A range of clubs, societies and informal bands on campus offer students the opportunity to get involved in any number of musical activities.

The city of Newcastle is great.  It has so much culture and history, and the riverside is particularly beautiful.  Some of my friends live further away in the city, but this isn't a problem because the city has an excellent public transport system.  The Metro train that runs through the city is cheap, quick and reliable so i can see my friends whenever i want.
