What is ELMO

English Language Material Online (ELMO) is an innovative, multi-media self-study website that helps students to develop their skills in English for academic purposes. ELMO comprises of a database of study units and activities that students can follow in their own time. These materials have been created for non-native speaker students and academic staff in Higher Education institutions. However, native English speakers may also find some units useful, particularly in developing academic writing skills.

On the site users can search for appropriate units in four different ways depending on whether the user wishes to just browse at all the available options (List All); look for units in a particular subject area (School); choose a certain skill to focus on (Skill) or find a particular unit title (Title). Each unit page contains detailed information about the content of each unit and includes between 3 and 8 activities. New units are regularly added to the ELMO site.

The ELMO website also allows users to develop a personalised study record.  After completing each activity you will be given a score, which can be saved in a database so that for each activity, your highest, lowest and average scores are displayed. As repetition and revision is an important part of language development, students are encouraged to repeat activities to improve their performance. The scores may also be accessed by your tutors, module leaders, Degree Programme Directors or INTO teachers.
