Core skills

The development of core skills in English and academic English is a key part of the course and includes the following:
  • reading
  • speaking
  • listening
  • writing skills
  • vocabulary
  • grammar

Postgraduate Study Skills

Through the Postgraduate Study Skills module, students will also have the opportunity to develop their knowledge, ability and confidence in a variety of skills that are essential for postgraduate study, including:
  • planning and getting started on research projects
  • research methods
  • taking part in, or leading group, discussions
  • quantitative and qualitative data analysis
  • team working
  • problem solving
  • critical thinking
  • time management
  • listening and note taking from authentic lectures

The Postgraduate Study Skills module also provides students with specific guidance that relates to their proposed postgraduate degree programme. Students will be introduced to the structure of postgraduate qualifications in the UK and what will be expected of them, receive guidance on referencing conventions within their academic school, and training in research methods and skills.
