Assessment

Entry to all postgraduate degrees at Newcastle University is highly competitive, and students hoping to progress onto Newcastle postgraduate degree programmes must maintain high standards throughout their Graduate Diploma programme. Whilst grades in the Graduate Diploma programme do not count towards the final degree, their performance will be used to determine whether they meet the specified progression grades for entry to their chosen postgraduate degree programme at the University.

Assessment is both formal and informal, designed to help students build on their successes and meet requirements for entry to postgraduate study. Marks do not count towards the Master’s qualification, but they help the university assess students’ abilities for their chosen field of study.

  • Assessment of English language and communication skills will be based on written assignments, oral presentations, interviews, and written examinations
  • assessment of academic modules will be based on written assignments, group project work, oral presentations and written examinations
  • assessment of the research component will be based on the final written version of a research project.

I really enjoy the teaching balance between lectures and seminars. Seminars are particularly interesting because we debate issues and topics. This gives us an opportunity to express our opinion and  also think about what we are studying.
