Assessment

Entry to all honours degrees at Newcastle University is highly competitive, and students hoping to progress onto Newcastle must maintain high standards throughout their programme. Whilst the student’s grades in the Foundation programme do not count towards the final degree, their performance will be used to determine whether they meet the specified progression grades for direct entry to their chosen degree programme at the University. Assessment is both formal and informal. Informally students are given advice and feedback throughout their programme from their teachers. Students will also be assessed by a combination of examinations at the end of each semester and coursework, including written essays, reports, field notebooks, practical exercises, group and individual research projects, bibliographical searches, oral and video presentations, and problem solving exercises. The type of assessment and their relative weightings vary between modules and are detailed in individual module outlines.

I really like the teaching style at INTO.  In maths instead of just being given a formula to use we are first taught how to calculate the formula and the reasons for using it.  This makes sure that we understand the process and reasons behind using it.  Compared to my home country this is more challenging but improves our understanding and allows us to learn more.
