Course description
All students will initially focus on the development of core English language skills. Students entering at an elementary level will continue to improve their core skills with additional focus classes covering grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary development. Students at lower intermediate and above will be allowed to choose specific areas for further study. The availability of options will depend on student demand and the student’s language level. General English classes will be supplemented with a range of options including:- Business English
- British culture and society
- North-east England
- Online: Writing blogs and using social networking sites
- Video project
- The media and current affairs
- Films and TV
- Popular music
Course aims
- To provide a high-quality course, which helps international students improve their general English language skills
- To provide a course with flexible entry points and different durations of study, which caters for students of different levels
- To specifically help students develop the four main skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, and increase their functional knowledge of grammar
- To develop an awareness and knowledge of English for Academic Purposes and the academic skills required for university study
- To develop a particular interest or skill through the medium of English within the range of options classes
- To provide the opportunity to extend students’ classroom contact hours through self-access learning
- To give students a general overview of Newcastle University and what it is like to be a student here
- To provide an introduction to local, regional and national culture through a range of social activities and visits.
