Assessment

Entry to all honours degrees at Newcastle University is highly competitive, and students hoping to progress onto Newcastle undergraduate degree programmes must maintain high standards throughout their Diploma programme. Whilst the students’ grades in the Diploma programme do not count towards the final degree, their performance will be used to determine whether they meet the specified progression grades for direct entry to their chosen degree programme at the University.

Assessment is both formal and informal. Informally students are given advice and feedback throughout their programme from their teachers, which help students to build on their successes and meet the requirements for entry to the second year of a degree. Students will also be assessed by a combination of examinations at the end of each semester and coursework, including written assignments, reports, practical exercises, group and individual research projects, bibliographical searches, oral and video presentations, and problem-solving exercises.
