Specialist modules: Pathways in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences

Biology

Life processes are studied to show fundamental similarities between living things. The unit takes an evolutionary approach to biology and considers different levels of organisation in living systems: sub-cellular; cellular; whole organism; population. In physiology, key principal systems (cardiovascular, respiratory and digestive) are studied.

Chemistry

This module builds on the fundamental principles of general chemistry to develop the concepts in physical, inorganic and organic chemistry. It includes: an introduction to basic atomic and molecular structure; the properties of gases and liquids and an understanding of the importance of energy in chemical reactions as well as an appreciation of the social, environmental, economic and technological impact of chemistry on the community.

Computing

This module includes: systems and programming concepts; design and interaction; data organisation and processing; spreadsheets and data visualisation; introductory programming.

Mathematics

This module includes: integral calculus; coordinate geometry; exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions; proof by induction; an introduction to 2D and 3D vector geometry. Students will develop a methodical approach to problem solving using mathematical techniques and theory.

Further Mathematics

This module includes: coordinate geometry – equation of a straight line; logarithms; exponentials – use of exponentials and logarithms as models; trigonometry (including circular measure and polar coordinates); sequences and series; differentiation – higher derivatives; applications; rates of change; integration; vectors in two and three dimensions.

Physics

This module includes: mechanics – vectors; forces and equilibrium; relative motion; Newton’s Laws of Motion; friction and work; energy and power; particle dynamics; matter and waves – sound; reflection; refraction; interference; diffraction; electro-magnetic waves; strengths of solids; fluids; heat and gases and the structure of the atom; electricity, electronics and fields – electrical current and charge; potential difference; resistance; capacitance; transistors and amplifiers; electrical fields; gravitational fields; magnetic fields and electromagnetic fields.
