Course content
This course is designed to improve the student’s general English language proficiency across all disciplines. It is the essential basis on which further specialist courses in Academic English can build. At higher levels of English proficiency, this course can provide a flexible programme of study ideal for developing the language and communication skills that will enhance career prospects and intercultural competence.In the core language classes, the emphasis is on language development and skills practice. Students will study grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation and practise their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. The aim is to develop their accuracy and fluency in understanding and using language appropriately.
Students at intermediate level and above who are not transferring on to another course or programme will also benefit from a range of activities that will allow them to develop skills and knowledge of more varied social and cultural aspects of English. These may include:
• British culture;
• conversation practice, debates and discussions;
• creative writing;
• drama, roleplay and story-telling;
• literature;
• oral presentation practice;
• topic based project work;
• business English.
